Modern Collective World Premiere

An Astonishing Surf Movie Released!!

Epic is a great word to describe what I saw and heard. The other day I took a late drive up to the City of Angels to take in the much anticipated premiere film from Taylor Steele’s young protégé Kai Neville. The stylish and smiling young artist from Australia has been under Taylor’s tutelage and has apparently created the film that will change the tide much like Taylors first films did many years ago. Taylor continues to break new ground in his cinematic works but for Kai’s digital canvas we are looking into the minds of the future of surfing style and filmmaking. In the lot outside the swank club Le Deux in H.Wood CA a who’s who of the industry gathered talking shop and all sorts of business. But once inside the mood switched on party; with some of the films stars getting well into the complimentary beverages. Skull Candy passed out wireless set-ups to everyone with customized MODERN Collective headphones and the room s started pulsing.

In a move of modern brilliance the hook here was that everyone at the premiere would listen to the entire movie on their own set of wireless headphones. Gotta run off to take slash and you’ll miss the visuals but your head will still be grooving to the audio of the fresh groundbreaking film.

For all the insane surfing my favorite part is a series of segments and scenes that chronicles the boys on their way to Morocco. The sounds mixed with the visuals and real background audio is so brilliantly edited it is surprising that a filmmaker so young could understand the craft so well. Of course spending time with Taylor probably didn’t hurt. The surfing in the film is indescribable the music is great and I’m cant wait for my copy of the DVD so that I can go straight to the music credits to chase down some of these bands.

I won’t try to talk about some of the surfers wave or tricks, you just have to see the film; you’ll have to see it a lot so you can pause and rewind, pause and rewind while picking your jaw off the ground. Dane and Jordy or Kobe-esque in their fetes but we all know that; its Dion Agius, Yadin Nicol and Mitch Coleborn that will really benefit and become recognized more from their surfing in this film. The pure massive quantity of crap surf turned into memorable cutting edge film sequences with leave you wondering; where do we go from here.
