On March 13th the scene was hot for people gathering at the Pacific Beach Surf Shop. Actually, that night was cold enough to make me want to stay home with a few cups of coffee. But, oh god, somehow I drove my car that night to see some of my old buddies, have some laughs, free drinks and food among the crowd.
Okay, it was my first time visiting the famous PB Surf Shop, and I was surprised how clean and neat they’ve kept the store. Smiling, friendly shop assistants were giving free food and drink, so I greedily grabbed cokes and chips and rushed up to the front row to get a closer look at some of the live performances happening on the stage. They had a raffle with some great prizes, which I quickly regretted not participating; some lucky people received backpacks, apparels, and some hundred-dollar-off tickets for surfboards.
When I got there, the Allensworth was playing their set. Their songs were pretty mellow but surely breezy and soulful. Sounds of percussions and a guitar warmed up the mood of the audience. After their set the Mattson 2 came out to play their tunes, and during their session the crowd was pumped up until their last note was played. Since Thomas Campbell used some songs of the Mattson 2 for his great movies, Sprout and Present, the Mattson 2 has been recognized as one of the most powerful and vigorous upcoming bands. They will play another live show at the Che Café of UCSD on this coming Saturday, March 20th, so if you missed the show at PB surf shop you better not to miss the next one. Also, they just finished some recordings for their next album and I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy.

After listening in such awesome performances by two bands (actually I couldn’t be on time for another band called Parker Macy Blues…sorry) I had a little time to cruise in and check out the PB Surf Shop. Their lineup of surfboard stocks seems excellent for having brands like Murphy, Gerry Lopez, Third World Exotic, Skip Frye, and Kevin Connelly. The PB Surf Shop is a must-see of California if you are like me and love authentic single-fin longboards and 2-or-4 fin fishes. Also at the show the Evocal presented some of its art-pieces and had a live-painting, done by Warren Heard, and Theo Hetherington. You can still see those paintings and art exhibits so please stop by and take time to check out those wonderful creations.

It was a really great time and I had some great conversation with Chris, the owner of Surf Indian in PB, Randy, the owner of the PB Surf Shop, and the Mattson 2; thank you my friends, for having me out for the fantastic show!!
