Re:Cal Exclusive Interview with Donna Von Hoesslin
Founder of Betty Belts, surfer, singer artist and all round everywoman.
In our world the entrepreneur is the basis for all things big and small. So many companies that are now giants in our industry came from small shapers or guys making t-shirts or some new kind of board shorts. California itself is a breeding ground for entrepreneurs, you could go all the way back to the gold rush and the possibilities and dreams that the great west held. California is full of people taking a chance to build something of their own. Donna Von Hoesslin is one of those people. I met her years ago not long after hearing about this brand Betty Belts that was growing and getting ...  read more >>>
Re:Cal Exclusive Interview with Mike Minchinton
Face of the True Craftman and His Words
Time passes. You see many people to come and go. A favorite theatre closed, and a new Blockbuster shows up instead. A big harbor shuts your favorite beach, and new breaks may appear. We just need to accept this universal rule; everything just changes, and nobody knows its consequence. Here is a very talented but conceivably underrated shaper, Mike Minchinton, gave some words to us. Even if you have seen this 57-years-old experienced and out-going craftsman, probably never imagined that he holds such delicate internal thoughts. You will see time gives you great memories and knowledge but a...  read more >>>
Re:Cal Exclusive Interview with the Mattson 2
A Small Talk with Jonathan and Jared Mattson
I still remember about the very fist night when I saw those two men. It was in an art show hosted by Paul Frank, and Robin Kegel leading Crème (now Gato Heroi) at that time. They were doing their things in 5 men band including Ray Barbee, and those sets literarily blew all audience away. After a week or so, surprisingly I met the twins in a college; we were in a same school. The Twins? They are Jonathan and Jared Mattson playing in a mininal jazz unit called, the Mattson 2. Many of you might hear the name, and their tunes played in Thomas Campbell’s Sprout and Present. They...  read more >>>
Xanadu Expression
A Short Talk with Xanadu
Xanadu Expression from Re:Cal Mag on Vimeo. Re:Cal was lucky enough to score an exclusive interview with Xanadu and a behind-the-scenes look at the shaping process of his latest art board "XANKO." We learned there's much more than meets the eye about the native brazilian master shaper, like his taste for fast cars and high fashion. We put together this nice little video for you so hopefully you can share in the experience and share with your friends....  read more >>>
Re:Cal Exclusive Interview with Andrew Kidman
Andrew: Surf Inspired Multi-Tasker Andrew Kidman inspired hope in me through film, writing, music and photography. I left surfing for a big chunk of time disillusioned with the direction it had taken in and out of the water. I had a chance to move to New York and go to school soon after and off into the world of music, radio, touring and clubs I went leaving all the aggro surf jocks behind. I found my way back, which I’ll publish a little story about later as it’s a whole story in itself, and ended up working at The Surfer’s Path in their U.S. office when it was in Enci...  read more >>>
Re:Cal Exclusive Interview with Tiffany Campbell
On my recent trip up the California coast for visits to Santa Cruz and Ventura I ran into Tiffany Campbell while interviewing Ashley Lloyd. Tiffany was gathering footage of Ashley for her forthcoming film “Dear & Yonder”. She tells me it’s about women from all over who inspire through their connection to the sea. Women surfers featured in the film include Ashley Lloyd, Kassia Meador, Sally Fitzgibbons, Sofia Mulanovich, CoCo Ho and a whole host of amazing gals who slide and shred. Keep checking back with us as I am sure we’ll post a review as soon as there is a...  read more >>>
Re:Cal Exclusive Interview with Gary Linden
From Oceanside in San Diego
Gary Linden is a legend and a local. Gary is a local in Oceanside California where he has lived since 1979. He has been shaping since 1978 in the very same factory location in Oceanside just blocks from a few fun beach breaks. One could argue he is a local in Cape Town as well where he spends a couple months out of the year planning, organizing and participating in the Red Bull Big Wave Africa Contest at Dungeon. Dungeon is the spooky and dangerous big wave break in a place called “shark alley” just outside Hout Bay near Cape Town South Africa. He also somehow finds time to be the ...  read more >>>
