Beneath The Surface
by Dana Morris; Surfers = Joel Tudor, Sam Hammer, Joe Curren, Nate Tyler, Greg and Rusty Long, Dodger Kremel, CJ Nelson, Josh Hoyer and many more. Places = Eight countries. approx. 60 min Studio 411 and Reel Life Films.
I love this Kind of film at least the look the story intention, the travel places chosen, the cinematography but please please can we do our best as young film makers, can we as the next generation try to not combine the art with the age old dry narration and obligatory lame surf film humor after a few segments of seriousness?
Nothing kills a film for me more than that Warren Miller style of voice over and attempted humor cut ins. Bruce Brown nailed it for surf films now let it go….Please.
Anyways, I was all ready to LOVE this film, opened it first when I received the batch of films and dove right into it.

The camera work is beautiful, the spacing, the colours and the talented eye that captured moments in far off lands.
The poor guys got skunked in a few places and it does let you down. It is what happened in the story and I love that the film makers stayed true to life instead of just dropping that segment and trying to scramble in some local footage to beef up the wave count for audience and sponsors. Don’t get me wrong you’ll find plenty of waves to dream and froth over. My favorite part of the disc though has to be the extras; This is the film I was expecting, amazing soundtrack t
o
incredible visuals and incredible waves and surfing.
The film is beautifully shot with a great story, probably even a nominee or award winner in some festival somewhere. It takes incredible guts and faith to line out a trip for a film that includes the places these guys went and hoped to score waves. I commend the film makers of course but also those who backed the film financially. Please continue to fund Dana’s work it while already top tier it will only get better and better. I look forward to the next adventure on film by Dana Morris.
