From the guys that brought you Single Fin: Yellow comes a well done film about the allure, romance, and deep seeded history driven surf culture of California. Jeremias and Baffa put a team together again in a collaboration that brings forth an exciting and beautifully shot film filled with poignant messages and pearls from a select few of the legends and future legends of our rich California Surf Community.
The film kicks off with some of the most beautiful water & shore capture of a session I’d seen in a while. The filmmakers scored during the amazing swell of December 2007. The segment with Joel Tudor reminded me of the energy and shear talent seen in Tyler Hatzikians segment that kicks off Single Fin: Yellow. Although I must say having surfed El Porto in those conditions Joel’s footage offers a much more inviting beautiful crisp January day with sparkling blue waters. The dark brownish grey winter waters of El Porto can be cruel, unforgiving and downright brutal and If choosing I’d be at Joel’s session for sure.
I never get tired of people chronicling our history and getting pearls from the fore fathers while also hearing from the current heroes about who their heroes were/are and what inspires them about surfing. It’s history, the craft and the feeling; it is something surfer’s of all ages should immerse themselves in and make an effort to pass on.
The film brings us connection between the old guard and the new torchbearers.

Joel Tudor connects us with Skip Frye and Skip connects us to Joel, Dan Perlee connects us to Greg Noll, Tyler Hatzikian connects us to his inspirations and Lance Carson.
There are great surfing segments in the film, like I said the Joel opener is awesome.
Next I love the sequence with the groovy Nick Drake inspired tunes scoring a golden California lit Gamboa and Joe Curren session at Rincon.
I like the fact in this film that they include Baja. I grew up traveling the entire west coast of mainland Mexico and all over Baja. Cutting my teeth on desert and jungle travel in its rawest form. To me Baja is California and I’m glad they put it in here.

You’ll find a great chapter nodding to the fresh Art Punks Alex Knost and Tyler Warren. I love this little scene that as far as I know is a handful of stylists bringing us some really fresh and exciting music and art. The surfing ain’t too shabby either breathing fun
and jagged pumped up life into legendary style. Check out the Dora influenced spasms Knost segment. I must also send an awestruck telegram to Mr. Warren. I find some tra artwork and exquisite stylings onquil peace in admiring Tyler’s amazingn long board and fish
To rant some more I’ve always been a fan of Tyler Hatzikian’s powerful and aggressive approach.
I surfed there quite a bit in the winters past and I just marveled at what Tyler did in those dredging sand pits
of death.

There are also some choice music bits scoring the interviews and surf sessions, see Alexi Murdoch and the Album Leaf as a couple favorites. The scoring is perfectly done by Zack Smith the Blacksmith along with the One California Day House Band, not sure where to find their work.
The DVD extras are absolutely key; there are several extra scenes of surf footage but also some stories with important California legends.
Stories from the Greg Noll shack
in the North end of Northern California is the gem of it all.
It’s another excellent piece of work to follow up from
“Single Fin: Yellow” and take everything up a notch.
A great gift DVD that can be watched over and over.
